Chronic Pain

Quirky Leaf CBD products, through scientific studies have been found to aid in the reduction or relief of pain ranging from minor to severe based on the strength and concentration of the CBD product used by those afflicted. In a study conducted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine on pain relief from post-surgical incisions found that rodents had less pain specifically caused by cuts or incisions after using CBD. Rodents that were given CBD oil in a non-rewarding way, wanted to take more CBD oil as a reward, presuming that rodents wanted more because “of pain relief or reduction of pain aversiveness.” This study concluded that the effects of CBD could play a role in pain relief.

Another study from 2012 analyzed the effects of CBD on chronic pain, or more specifically neuropathic and spinal pain stated “we report that system and intrathecal [into the spinal cord] administration of cannabidiol (CBD)... significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance [increased tolerance against CBD] in rodents.”

The conclusion stated that rodents were able to receive pain relief without building an increased tolerance against CBD, therefore each daily dose did not become less effective overtime. The results suggest great news for human consumption seeking alternative means of pain relief. However, human studies need to be done to make any conclusion.

Based off this evidence, the benefits guide goes as follows: 500mg CBD products: Minor pain relief 1000mg CBD products: Moderate pain relief 1500mg CBD products: Severe pain relief

Chronic Inflammation

As defined, Inflammation is your body's way of protecting itself from infection, illness, or injury. As part of the inflammatory response, your body increases its production of white blood cells, immune cells, and substances called cytokines that help fight infection.

A study on rats with inflammatory joint pain were given a daily oral treatment of CBD to combat the symptoms of reduced range of motion and pain. The study found that CBD oil reduced the pain response and by decreasing the pain response or threshold, inflammation itself decreases.

As a result, CBD oil appears to reduce the way the body responds these afflictions and ailments. Instead of aiding in, or causing inflammation, CBD oil shows remarkable data for anti-inflammatory actions that decrease the body’s negative immune response.

Immunomodulatory Effects

According to its definition, immunomodulatory is a chemical agent capable of modifying or regulating one or more immune functions; an immunologic adjustment, regulation, or potentiation.

Though extensive research, CBD has consistently shown to have potent effects in internal body controls, [Biochem Pharmacol. 2008] and shows significant evidence for increasing the activation of cells that control immune response and health (T cells). CBD also provides evidence of increasing the magnitude of specific cell function responses that increase immune system benefits and modulation, which serves to improve overall immune function.

Another study found evidence that the way CBD affects the cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) lends to the potential of how cannabidiol may assist in modulating the immune system. The study acknowledges clear evidence that CBD helps immunomodulation during the inflammation process, and that CBD may affect it in four ways. This includes inducing the normal death cycle of cells, decreasing cell creation vs death (increased for tumors), producing more anti-inflammatory agents, and creating more regulatory T cells.

Targeting CB2 is cited as a possible revolutionary approach to the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Fibromyalgia

A small sample size of study has shown evidence that CBD can help reduce pain caused by fibromyalgia. A review from 2013 states that cannabidiol (CBD) can help to relieve pain caused by fibromyalgia as well as other conditions. In addition, evidence supporting the findings are customer reviews who have found benefits for fibromyalgia and supporting evidence of inflammation and pain relief in general.

Another study from 2006 did find evidence that a reduced amount of endocannabinoids in the brain can lead to issues such as fibromyalgia, migraines, irritable bowel and other “treatment-resistant” symptoms. These neurotransmitter deficiencies can serve to elevate these symptoms if left untreated.

In that case, CBD would restore the deficiencies of endocannabinoids through the compounds binding those receptors in the brain. The article suggests that Cannabis is a possible solution for Fibromyalgia, as well as migraines.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Researchers conducted a 2016 study that applied CBD gel to rats for four days in a row. The rats received either 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, or 62.3 milligrams (mg) per day. The researchers noted reduced inflammation and overall pain in the rats’ affected joints with no obvious side effects.

Rats that received low doses of 0.6 or 3.1 mg didn’t improve pain scores. The researchers found that 6.2 mg/day was a high enough dose to reduce the rat’s pain and swelling. In addition, rats that received 62.3 mg/day had similar outcomes to the rats that received 6.2 mg/day. Receiving a substantially larger dosage didn’t result in the rodents having less pain.

The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of CBD gel and other topicals has shown evidence in potentially bringing relief to people suffering from arthritis.

Migraines / Chronic Headaches

Despite very limited research on the benefits of CBD and the treatment of migraines, there are studies that have provided some conclusive evidence for people afflicted with the debilitating condition. One study (insert hyperlink to the downloaded study I’ll provide) was conducted on almost 50 chronic migraine volunteers in Italy and presented to the 3rd Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in 2017.

The experiment involved providing those volunteers with a combination of two compounds, one containing 19% THC and the other containing 0% THC and 9% CBD, for a period of three months. Starting with 10mg of total dosage. The study noted no beneficial effects were noticed until 100mg, and then at 200mg found a 55% decrease in acute pain from migraines and chronic headaches.

It was discovered that the relief effectiveness of the Cannabis compound combination to be in line with other migraine treatments, however, they also noticed a 43.5% reduction in acute pain intensity from migraines as well…unlike the other treatments. This is possibly due to the effect that CBD has on the brain and neurotransmitters, in contrast to other treatments which don’t work the same way THC-CBD does. Despite the positive finding, research and clinical studies are ongoing.
