Nerve Pain

The same study that discovered the benefits of CBD for inflammation pain, also found that a daily oral treatment of between 2.5mg-20mg of CBD to rodents over the course of 14 days after nerve pain issues seemed to relieve the pain, concluding that there is a “potential for therapeutic use of cannabidiol in chronic painful states.”

Multiple Sclerosis

Recent discoveries have shown that CBD presents benefits through ongoing clinical studies to improve Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The benefits related to CBD use in those afflicted with MS are still under investigation. However, data indicates that CBD helps to reduce muscle spasticity and pain.

Osteoarthritis & Neuropathic Pain

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. Persistent symptoms, such as intermittent inflammation, joint degeneration, and peripheral neuropathy can become debilitating over time.

A clinical study from 2017 made attempts to determine the efficacy of CBD in halting the inflammation process that leads to Osteoarthritis and neuropathy pain. Additionally, the study served to analyze CBD's anti-nociceptive properties (the ability to block the feeling or detection of injurious or painful stimulus of sensory neurons). In other words, CBD’s ability to prevent the afflicted from feeling pain or injuries.

The study called for doctors to induce Osteoarthritis in male rodents, followed by the administering of CBD to review the effective results. The study revealed that in end stage Osteoarthritis, CBD reduced both acute and transient joint inflammation. The study also revealed CBD to exhibit neuroprotective properties, helping in the prevention of feelings of discomfort to the brain and senses.

The data from this study indicated that consistent administration of CBD blocked Osteoarthritis and Neuropathic pain. The study also concluded that CBD treatment helped to prevent the later development of pain and nerve damage in Osteoarthritic joints, and that CBD may be a safe and useful therapeutic alternative for treating pain.

Seizures / Epilepsy

In 2018, the Federal Drug Administration approved for the first time a CBD treatment for two rare conditions of seizures and epilepsy called Epidiolex. In addition, this is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana or hemp.

1. Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) is a complex, rare, and severe childhood-onset epilepsy. It is characterized by multiple and concurrent seizure types, cognitive dysfunction, and slow spike waves on electroencephalogram (EEG).

2. Dravet Syndrome is a rare, catastrophic, and lifelong form of epilepsy that begins in the first year of life with frequent and/or prolonged seizures.

This was huge step in medical treatment as the first approved treatment for Dravet Syndrome. According to FDA.gov, "Epidiolex’s effectiveness was studied in three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials involving 516 patients with either Lennox- Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome. Epidiolex, taken along with other medications, was shown to be effective in reducing the frequency of seizures when compared with placebo."

Epidiolex, which contains 100mg/ml of CBD, as well as dehydrated alcohol, sesame seed oil, strawberry flavor, and sucralose, was found to decrease seizure rate by 42%.

Neuroprotective Properties

Neuroprotective properties serve to protect nerve cells against damage, degeneration, or impairment of function.

Scientific study has revealed plentiful evidence corroborating CBD's ability as a neuroprotective agent and the benefits to the recipient. One study showed that “as a neuroprotectant, CBD helps reduce damage to the brain and nervous system and encourages the growth and development of new neurons”. In other words, CBD encourages neuroplasticity, the growth of new neurons in the brain, therefore decreasing the brain's deterioration. CBD may protect against damages from "ischemia, traumatic blows, or autoimmune and genetic disorders" and help recovery from them.

This report may also suggest CBD's possible effectiveness in helping in the recovery effort from brain traumas or injuries. Another study [Surg Neurol Int. 2018] found that CBD might help with brain damage, degenerative diseases, and inflammation specifically, which ties into neurobehavior and improvements.

Therapeutic effects of CBD when administered to treat symptoms have taken 4-6 weeks of constant use to start seeing any clinical effects. Proper dosing in conjunction with consistent use is critical.

Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementias (Parkinson’s, Huntington’s)

The topic of CBD health benefits continues to grow with new CBD and Dementia research. In recent studies, CBD has been shown to reduce or remove the impact of inflammation, oxygen buildup and brain cell decline.

Inflammation has been shown to increase the negative impact of Alzheimer’s disease. The inflammatory response happens when the brain’s immune cells fail to clear disorienting blockages. The inflammation that is a core cause of Alzheimer’s symptoms can often be reduced by using CBD oil.

Oxygen is released as a reactive, stress-induced component of Alzheimer’s disease. When inflammation happens in the brain, oxygen is released as a result. The greater the inflammation, the greater the negative impact. Important brain functions such as memory are decreased as more oxygen is released in the brain’s cells. Memory loss and other brain deterioration indirectly leads to increased oxygen in the brain. CBD is an antioxidant, which helps reduce the problems associated with oxygen stress. Brain functions negatively impacted by oxygen stress can be improved by using CBD.

Alzheimer’s patients’ brain cells often show a path of rapid decline and destruction. The potential of stimulating brain tissue was recently discovered as a potential benefit of CBD. In clinical trials, CBD has shown the ability to reverse and even prevent the development of Alzheimer’s negative impact. A 2011 study by Australian researchers Tim Karl and Carl Group found that CBD promotes the growth and development of brain cells, which were shown to reduce the decline of memory and other brain functions.

Regarding CBD effects on dementia, a term describing problems with reasoning, planning, judgment, memory and other thought processes caused by brain damage from impaired blood flow to one’s brain, discoveries were made in a 2016 study by the US National Institute of Health (NIH) that by activating CB2 (cannabinoid) receptors in the brain, increased blood flow lead to recovery to the brain. Activating the CB2 receptors with CBD has increased brain cell activity and helped reduce brain cell damage commonly associated with vascular dementia.

Through clinical research, CBD has shown to contain effective brain protectors, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which can be beneficial for managing Parkinson’s disease as well as Huntington’s.
